The \u00c4rj\u00e4 Arctic Walk<\/strong> nature exercise event, organized for the first time, is part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture<\/strong> year, to whose programme it has been selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guided \u00c4rj\u00e4 Arctic Walk<\/strong> hiking event is one of five \u00c4rj\u00e4 Arctic nature exercise events, the first of which\u2014open-water swimming and trail running\u2014were held in August 2025 on the stunning island of \u00c4rj\u00e4nsaari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located on Ouluj\u00e4rvi\u2019s \u00c4rj\u00e4nselk\u00e4, the widest open lake area in Finland\u2019s inland waters, the 270-hectare island of \u00c4rj\u00e4nsaari<\/strong> is part of a ridge formation that runs across Finland, from the Russian border in Lieksa to Hailuoto and beneath the sea. The beautiful sandy beaches of \u00c4rj\u00e4nsaari were used as the filming location for the opening scene of the movie Ambush<\/em> (Rukaj\u00e4rventie<\/em>). In addition to its beaches, \u00c4rj\u00e4 is known for its high sand cliffs\u2014up to 30 metres\u2014offering expansive views over the open waters of Ouluj\u00e4rvi\u2019s \u00c4rj\u00e4nselk\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by a guide, participants will take a walk of approximately 5 km<\/strong>, during which they will hear about the island\u2019s colourful history while admiring the wide lake scenery from the high cliffs\u2014views that inspired poet Eino Leino<\/strong> as he sailed to \u00c4rj\u00e4 from H\u00f6vel\u00f6nlahti in Paltaniemi along the Kajaani River. You\u2019ll also hear how the Ancylus Lake, the S\u00e1mi, the Reindeer Church, tar-burning pits, tar rowers, lake pirates, UPM\u2019s Kajaani Paper Mill, lichen gathering, architect Eino Pitk\u00e4nen, Greenpeace, the Ministry of the Environment, Mets\u00e4hallitus\u2019 Parks & Wildlife services, paragliders, geocaches, sheep herders, and many stories both true and legendary are all connected to the history of \u00c4rj\u00e4nsaari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u00c4rj\u00e4nsaari summer kiosk<\/strong> is open daily from June to August, 11:00\u201316:00, and it also serves visitors during the event. The kiosk rents out kayaking equipment, SUP boards, bicycles, a tent sauna, and the former representative sauna of the paper mill in Vierasniemi, where President Kekkonen once bathed. Cabins can be rented from Mets\u00e4hallitus\u2019 Parks & Wildlife services, and camping is free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c4rj\u00e4nsaari can be reached daily by the fast and safe boat rides operated by Luonnollisesti Ouluj\u00e4rvi Oy<\/strong>, departing from Ruunaniemi in Vuoreslahti, Kajaani (Ruunaniementie 70). The trip takes about 10 minutes \/ 4 km. The 49 \u20ac participation fee<\/strong> includes the guided walk as well as round-trip boat transport, which can also be purchased separately during the open-water season for 32 \u20ac, and 16 \u20ac for children under 12. Boat transport can also be paid for with Epassi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
